Jon S. Vincent, a Colorado native and fly fisherman by heritage, completed his B.A. and Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico . He was a Fulbright Fellow in Portugal and a Fulbright-Hays awardee for research in Brazil before joining the University of Kansas faculty in 1967. He served as Director of the Center of Latin American Studies , Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, director of various study abroad programs, and was known for his dynamically entertaining teaching style until his untimely death in 1999. Among his major publications was a much acclaimed monograph on Joao Guimaraes Rosa (1978). His missionary passion for Brazilian studies is reflected in Culture and Customs of Brazil (2003), published after his death with the help of fellow Brazilianists. His presentations in the U.S. and abroad promoted cross-cultural understanding and an appreciation of diversity.
