Mancunicon: (Don't) Ask The Scientist
25 Mar 2016 - 1.00PM
(Don't) Ask the Scientist!
Part of Mancunicon, the 67th British National Science Fiction Convention, or Eastercon, to be held over the Easter weekend, 25-28 March 2016.
Friday 13:00 - 14:00, Deansgate 2 (Hilton Deansgate), Manchester
How often has new or future tech been deployed by SF-type narratives in ways that would make real scientists' shudder? And does it really matter, if writers sometimes get the science wrong, or stray far beyond the realistically possible? Maybe that's the point. For this panel scientists, and historians of science, discuss examples of bad (and good!) uses of science popular fiction and film, and ask the question: show the S and F of SF be slightly closer together?
Ra Page, Dr Amy Chambers, Prof Susan Stepney
