Jana Juráňová
Jana Juráňová (1957) is a columnist, translator and writer of fiction as well as plays for the theatre and radio. A key figure in Slovak feminism, in 1993 she co-founded the feminist cultural, educational and publishing organisation ASPEKT. In several works, such as her play Misky strieborné, nádoby výborné (Silver Bowls, Excellent Vessels, 1997, published 2005) and parabiographical novel Žila som s Hviezdoslavom (2008, Ilona. My Life with the Bard) she explores hidden recesses of Slovak literature and resurrects forgotten or suppressed female voices. In 2019 the President of Slovakia awarded her the Order of Ľudovít Štúr (First Class) for her extraordinary contribution to the development of democracy, human rights and freedom, as well as for her literary activities.
