Lajos Grendel (1948–2018) is the best-known representative of Hungarian-language writing in Slovakia. He taught Hungarian literature at Comenius University in Bratislava, worked as editor-in-chief of the Hungarian literary magazines Irodalmi Szemle and Kalligram, and served on various social and cultural organisations. He began his literary career in the late 1960s, making his mark within Slovakia’s majority culture with his trilogy of novels Éleslövészet/Ostrá streľba (1981 Sharpshooting); Galeri/Odkundesi (1982 Roughnecks), Áttételek/Odvodeniny (1985/1986 Transfers), which received the Slovak Writers‘ Union prize for the outstanding work of prose in 1986.
