About the event
Explore the world of found-text and Analog Horror with author Brontë Schiltz, and get your work published in a Comma eBook.
Recovered manuscripts, intercepted letters, not-so-secret diaries...
From its inception, the hulking canon of horror has been rife with found texts that use the found-manuscript format to blur the line between fact and fiction: Bram Stoker's Dracula, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Horror of the Heights and Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto to name just a few.
In the internet age, this tradition has sprouted modern takes like the found-footage film, augmented reality games and the emerging field of Analog Horror, characterised by the use of diegetic, in-world media, and a late 20th century aesthetic.
This course blends the old with the new, exploring the early gothic roots of the genre, and incorporating modern reinventions of the form.
Over the duration of this 6-session course attendees will explore the found-manuscript genre through close readings and writing exercises, and will create 1-3 short stories from start to finish, with guidance from author and Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies PhD Brontë Schiltz.
Your best story will (with your permission) be published in a Comma eBook and made available for sale via Amazon Kindle, like the one below.
