About the event
Join Comma Press and the University of Manchester for Manchester in Translation 2026, an annual event designed to celebrate literary translation.
This year’s iteration of Manchester in Translation will focus on Chinese, and will involve a short talk on literary translation followed by a practical Chinese to English translation workshop led by experienced literary translator Jack Hargreaves. No Chinese language experience necessary! There will also be a separate English to Chinese workshop available for Chinese speakers led by Dr Yu Kit Cheung, lecturer in Chinese Translation Studies at the University of Manchester.
Please note that this will be an evening event from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, and will take place at Club Academy, Manchester Students' Union (basement)

About Your Workshop Leaders
Dr Yu Kit Cheung is Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Chinese Translation Studies at The University of Manchester, UK. He is also a Steering Committee Member of the East Asian Translation Pedagogy Advance, UK and a Chartered Linguist of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK. Previously, he had taught translation at Lingnan University of Hong Kong for eight years until 2021, where he also served as its Chinese and Translation Editor in 2020-21. In 2018-21, he was Vice-president of the Hong Kong Translation Society. In addition to academic works, he publishes short articles about translation and language in general on his personal website: Fans of Translation.
Jack Hargreaves is a Chinese-English translator from East Yorkshire, now based in London. Specialising in literary and academic translation, his work has appeared on Asymptote Journal, Words Without Borders, LitHub, adda, Samovar, The Southern Review, and elsewhere. He translated Shen Dacheng’s 沈大成 short story ‘Novelist in the Attic’ 《阁楼小说家》 and Wen Zhen's 文珍 'Date at the Art Gallery' 《我们夜里在美术馆谈恋爱》 for The Book of Shanghai and The Book of Beijing (Comma Press), respectively, and, with Yan Yan, Li Juan’s 李娟 Winter Pasture 《冬牧场》 and Chai Jing’s 柴静 Seeing《看见》(Astra House). His academic translations include A History of Chinese Philosophical Thought《中国哲学思想史》 by Zhang Xianghao 张祥浩 and Buddhism and Buddhology《中国佛教与佛学》 by Hong Xiuping 洪修平.
