About the event

This translation workshop will explore the work of one of Italy’s hottest contemporary writers, Elena Ferrante, in both fiction and essay form. We will translate in groups, discussing the challenges, choices and translation strategies as we work. Knowledge of the language is essential, but no previous translation experience is required.

Ruth Clarke is the inaugural translator in residence at New Writing North and Durham University. She is a literary translator from Italian, French and Spanish who has translated an eclectic range of work by authors from Benin to Venezuela, including Evelina Santangelo’s haunting novel From Another World (Granta, 2021). Ruth teaches on the MA in Translation Studies at Durham University and has been a mentor for the British Council’s Translation Fellowship. She is keen to bring translation to the public stage, speaking at events such as Crossing Border Festival, London Book Fair and International Translation Day. She promotes translation through New Spanish Books and Translate Swiss Books, and she is a founding member of The Starling Bureau, a collective of literary translators.

Groups will be limited to 15 people to allow for individual attention, and applicants will be asked to answer a few quick questions when booking to determine their suitability for the workshop. This information won't be shared with anyone but the workshop facilitator.
