Sean O'Brien on Edgar Allan Poe - Morphologies Masterclass

2 Jun 2020 - 7.00PM

Every fortnightly Tuesday at 7pm on the Comma Press Facebook page, Comma will livestream a masterclass given by a contemporary short story writer on the work of a classic counterpart, how they learned from them, and what you can learn, in turn, from them both.

Join us on the 2nd June to watch Sean O'Brien, award-winning poet and prolific short story writer, critic, editor, translator, playwright, broadcaster and novelist, on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. This class will be followed by writing prompts.

The six masterclasses we will broadcast were originally delivered around the publication of ‘Morphologies’, an anthology of 15 leading contemporary practitioners offering structural appreciations of past masters of the form as well as their own perspectives on what the short story does so well. During this programme, the ‘Morphologies’ eBook will be discounted by half price to just £2.50, so that those who wish to can read each author's essay ahead of their class.

Buy the eBook to read Sean's essay on Edgar Allan Poe ahead of the class (+ 14 more essays).

Each masterclass will also be followed by writing prompts, some by the contemporary authors themselves, and Frank Cottrell-Boyce will close the programme with a Q&A on how he was influenced by the work of Chekhov.

The six masterclasses will be:

David Constantine on DH Lawrence

21st April

Jane Rogers on Dostoyevsky

5th May

Alison MacLeod on Katherine Mansfield

19th May

Sean O’Brien on Edgar Allan Poe

2nd June

Stuart Evers on Sherwood Anderson

16th June

Frank Cottrell-Boyce on Anton Chekhov + Q&A

The aim of the Morphologies Masterclass livestreams is to engage those who are interested in working with the short story in the work of its masters, and to help to improve their own practice accessibly during the current lockdown.
