Comma is Recruiting: Arabic Intern (paid)

Arabic Translation Internship with Comma Press (based in Manchester)

Three-month full-time internship offered by the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW) and funded by the AHRC.

This autumn, the award-winning independent publishing house, Comma Press, is offering a three-month internship for an Arabic translation graduate, to be based within the publisher's Manchester office.

Internship Description

With the support of CASAW, this will be a funded position (through a monthly stipend payment to cover living, subsistence and travel expenses) and will provide the successful candidate with a unique introduction to the literary publishing industry.

The intern will be charged with helping the press develop a permanent Arabic translation imprint, and will cover all aspects of the editorial process: commissioning, acquisition, production, digital production, sales, event management, marketing and editorial. The role will also require a degree of research into creative writing activities across a range of countries, liaising with universities in the Middle East, developing contacts, and building links with authors and readers.

The intern will work on the development of several titles, including an anthology of Egyptian short stories (The Book of Cairo), an Iraqi science fiction commission (Iraq Plus 100), an anthology of African stories (including several Arabic authors), a possible Book of Khatoum, and two anthologies exploring experiences of detention and historical moments of protest. The intern will also be expected to help manage certain public events with everything that entails (from writing funding bids and visa applications, through to basic interpreting at events).

Hours & Duration

The internship will run: 1 September 2014 - 31 November 2014 (flexible if necessary). Full time.

Maximum monthly stipend: £1310.50 (for a full time internship). This is provided in line with AHRC Studentship guidelines and is to cover living, travel and subsistence of the intern.
