Full-time position: (5 days, 35 hours per week)
Location: Manchester, Northern Quarter/Ancoats

Comma Press, one of the UK’s leading independent literary publishers, seeks a Sales and Publicity Coordinator with excellent copywriting, communication and IT skills to help grow audiences for our publishing programme (ten titles per year). Working both independently and in a team, the successful candidate will engage in all aspects of creating and co-ordinating promotional materials to present to the trade, as well as media. We are a small team and there is ample opportunity for the Sales and Publicity Coordinator to become involved in other areas depending on interest, but this is not a requirement.

Key responsibilities:

• Planning and implementing all aspects of a publicity campaign, from handling media enquiries to creating press releases and devising mailings.
• Developing and maintaining Comma’s publicity database, and building strong relationships with authors and the media.
• Reporting on media coverage to the team, to our sales reps and to authors, agents and translators.
• Submitting books and authors to relevant prizes, and securing coverage for Comma’s sector support initiatives.

• Managing relationships with distributors (domestic and international), sales reps, wholesalers, libraries, bookshops, and online retailers, and ensuring that all metadata is up to date and accurate.
• Creating and presenting sales and marketing materials for sale conferences, and monitoring consumer demand.

Requirements:

Full in-house training will be given for all aspects of the role, but prior experience or a basic understanding of the way books are sold, marketed and promoted is essential. We are looking for someone that can speak passionately about books, and who is looking to be part of our team and stay with Comma Press as we grow and develop.

Successful candidates will have:

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to create engaging copy to promote a dynamic and varied list of titles.
• Strong IT skills, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Some knowledge of Adobe Indesign and Photoshop is desirable.
• Excellent organisational and administrative skills, and an ability to prioritise and work to strict deadlines with accuracy and flair.
• An interest in current affairs, online and print media, as well as literary fiction and books in translation.

Our commitment:

Comma employs people on the basis of their abilities. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and aim to attract and develop talent who reflect a broad representation of differences, including race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, physical ability, neurodiversity, age, family status, economic background and status, geographical background and status, and perspective.

If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.

How to apply:

To apply, please send your CV (including contact details for two references) and a covering letter to Ra Page, detailing why you feel you are suitable for the role and your interest in Comma Press, and including 150-200 words about a book you've recently read and loved (preferably one that's been published in the last two years) as if you were trying to persuade someone to buy/read it. Email to ra.page@commapress.co.uk with Publicity and Sales Coordinator in the subject line. The deadline for applications is midnight Monday 2 May.
