Banthology North American edition announced

We are really excited to announce that our newest release, Banthology: Stories from Unwanted Nations, is being published in partnership with Deep Vellum in the United States. Banthology will be officially published in the UK on the 25th of January, 2018. It will also be published in North America by Deep Vellum in March, 2018.

In January 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order halting all refugee admissions for 120 days and temporarily barring entry from seven Muslim-majority countries. Banthology brings together specially commissioned stories from the so-called ‘banned nations’ from the original executive order: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Covering a range of approaches – from satire, to allegory, to literary realism – it explores the emotional and personal impact of all restrictions on movement, and is testament to the importance of creative resistance in turbulent times.

Sarah Cleave, editor of Banthology, said: ‘It has been a real pleasure working with so many talented writers from the affected countries. We asked authors to respond however which way they wanted to the ban through fiction, and the resulting stories are bursting with humour and light, as well as a deep-seated frustration with the reality show that is American politics right now. If anyone knows how we can get a copy to Trump, please do get in touch!’

‘This is the type of book Deep Vellum was founded to publish,’ notes Deep Vellum‘s director and publisher, Will Evans. Literature offers a means to bring cultures into conversation, to share stories, build connections, grow empathy. The stories in Banthology reflect the shared experience of the human condition that unites us all, and no hateful political ban will ever be stronger than the bonds of our shared humanity.‘

Readers have already responded positively to the book: M. Lynx Qualey of Arab Lit quotes ‘Seven fresh, surprising views on boundaries and borders in a collection that combines black humour, Islamo-futurism, fantasy, and painful realities.’

‘At turns hilarious and tragic, ironic and heartbreaking, Banthology should be read everywhere, at anytime. And in particular, right now.’- Maaza Mengiste.
